Along with Wi and Mixer Design Group, LINK provided project management and engineering / design horsepower and helped in prototype fabrication of this award-winning machine. The XPS™ is a lung perfusion system which pumps “blood” and breathes a set of donor organs until which time they can be transplanted into an ailing patient. The machine also allows initially unacceptable organs to be revived, thereby increasing the pool of donors available. Lungs are also assessed by the XPS™ and identifed if they are not suitable for transplant, decreasing the potential for rejection upon implantation.
The XPS™ was awarded first place in NASA’s Create the Future Design Contest in 2011 under the Medical Category. More importantly, this product is saving lives and is helping to shorten the wait time for recipients of much-needed transplant organs. LINK is honored to have played a part in its development.
